Tips for Auditory Learning
We talked yesterday about how to find out what type of learner you are. We also found out that there are three different types. Today we’re going to be talking about Auditory.
Auditory Learning
Record lectures
Listen to the lectures. If you record them, but don’t ever play them back, they will do you no good. After you listen to the lecture, try to repeat back some of the major points that you heard. The single most important purchase you could make during your college career is a digital tape recorder. I used an Olympus, you can get a 4gb for less than $50 here. Keep plenty of batteries (use rechargeable ones, they will save you money in the long run). Sit close to the front of the class – as an auditory learner you should be doing that anyway.
Participate in Study groups
Worked well for me. We used flash cards. I’ve mentioned before that flash cards work well no matter what kind of learning style you have. It may take you a few tries to find a study group that works well for you, don’t give up.
Visit your professor
When you have any questions or want a topic to be explained further. Most professors have office hours, find out if you need an appointment and make one. Ask him or her if you can record them.
Talk out answers – do everything outloud.
Read your text, while reading record highlights
When I read the chapters of my nursing text books, I would highlight things. When I was finished reading them I would go over the highlighted items and record them. As you learn what will be on your nursing test, make sure to include those itmes in your highlighting.
If you don’t have someone to talk about the topic with, use the mirror in your bathroom
Watch videos
No matter what you’re studying for, you will likely be able to find a video that will help you out. You can go to YouTube or another good place is the Khan academy. As with anything on the internet, you’ll want to make sure the information is correct, BEFORE you start to study it.
Be aware that auditory learners are easilty distracted by … wait for it … sounds.
By the way, some folks say there may be more than three styles, they say there are four (but our three are included).
